Normally,<br \/>human cells grow and multiply to form new cells as the body needs them, but sometimes this<br \/>process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply. These cells may form<br \/>tumors that can be cancerous, called malignant, or not cancerous called benign. Cancerous<br \/>tumors spread into, or invade, nearby tissues and can travel to distant places in the body to form<br \/>new tumors in a process called\u00a0metastasis. Benign tumors do not spread into or invade nearby<br \/>tissues. When removed, benign tumors usually don\u2019t grow back, whereas cancerous tumors<br \/>sometimes do.<br \/><br \/>Types of Cancer<br \/><br \/>They are usually named for the organs or tissues where the cancers form. Cancers also may be<br \/>described by the type of cell that formed them, such as epithelial\u00a0cell or squamous cell. Some<br \/>categories of cancers that begin in specific types of cells are:<br \/><br \/>CARCINOMA<br \/><br \/>The most common type of cancer. They are formed by epithelial cells, which are the cells<br \/>that cover the inside and outside surfaces of the body. Carcinomas that begin in different<br \/>epithelial cell types have specific names:<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Adenocarcinoma is a cancer that forms in epithelial cells that produce fluids or<br \/>mucus, called glandular tissues. Most cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate are<br \/>adenocarcinomas.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Basal cell carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the lower layer of the epidermis, which is the outer layer of skin.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Squamous cell carcinoma is a cancer that forms in squamous cells, which are<br \/>epithelial cells that lie just beneath the outer surface of the skin. They line many other organs, including the stomach, intestines, lungs, bladder, and kidneys.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Transitional cell carcinoma is a cancer that forms in a type of epithelial tissue<br \/>called transitional epithelium, or urothelium. This tissue is found in the linings of<br \/>the bladder, ureters, and part of the kidneys, and a few other organs.<br \/><br \/>SARCOMA<br \/><br \/>Sarcomas are cancers that form in bone and soft tissues, including muscle, fat, blood<br \/>vessels, lymph vessels, and fibrous tissue like tendons and ligaments. The most common types of soft tissue sarcoma are leiomyosarcoma, Kaposisarcoma, and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Osteosarcoma is the most common cancer of bone.<\/p><p>Leukemia is the type of cancer that begin in the blood-forming tissue of the\u00a0bone marrow.<\/p><p>In these cancers, large numbers of abnormal white blood cells build up in the blood and<br \/>bone marrow. There are four common types of leukemia:<br \/><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer in which the bone<br \/>marrow makes too many lymphocytes and gets worse quickly.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) develops from cells that would turn into white<br \/>blood cells (other than lymphocytes), red blood cells, or platelet-making cells. Is<br \/>the most common type of adult leukemia.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer in which the bone<br \/>marrow makes too many lymphocytes and gets worse slowly.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) develops from the cells that make red blood cells, platelets, and most types of white blood cells (except lymphocytes) and gets worse slowly.<\/p><p>LYMPHOMA<br \/><br \/>Lymphoma is cancer that begins in lymphocytes, named T cells or B cells. These are<br \/>disease-fighting white blood cells that are part of the immune system. They build up in lymph nodes and lymph vessels, as well as in other organs of the body. There are two main types of lymphoma:<br \/><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of disease where people have abnormal lymphocytes<br \/>formed from B cells and have a specific type of cell called Reed-Sternberg cells.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0&#8211; Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of disease that can grow quickly or slowly and<br \/>can form from B cells or T cells. They do not have Reed-Sternberg cells.<\/p><p>MULTIPLE MYELOMA<br \/><br \/>Multiple myeloma is the type of cancer that begins in plasma cells. The abnormal plasma cells build up in the bone marrow and form tumors in bones all<br \/>through the body. Multiple myeloma is also called plasma cell myeloma and Kahler disease.<\/p><p>MELANOMA<br \/><br \/>Melanoma is cancer that begins in cells that become melanocytes, which are specialized<br \/>cells that make melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color.<br \/><br \/>BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD TUMORS<br \/><br \/>There are different types of brain and spinal cord tumors. These tumors are named based on the type of cell in which they are formed and where the tumor first formed in the central nervous system. For example, an astrocytic tumor begins in brain cells called astrocytes, which help<br \/>keep\u00a0nerve cells\u00a0healthy.<br \/><br \/>NEUROENDOCRINE TUMORS<br \/><br \/>Neuroendocrine tumors form from cells that release hormones into the blood in response<br \/>to a signal from the nervous system. They<br \/>can be caused by genetic changes, abnormal development or injury to nervous system, infections,<br \/>or tumor. <br \/><br \/>They fall into several categories:<br \/><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer\u2019s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and<br \/>Parkinson\u2019s disease.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Neuromuscular conditions as Muscular dystrophy.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Brain conditions like Epilepsy, Migraines and headache disorders, Stroke and Traumatic<br \/>brain injury.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Spine conditions such as Spina bifida, Spinal cord injury and Spinal muscular atrophy.<br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Peripheral nerve conditions as Peripheral neuropathy, Carpal tunnel syndrome and Bell\u2019s<br \/>palsy.<br \/><br \/>EPILEPSY<\/p><p>Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to<br \/>having recurrent seizures. When a person has two or more seizures is considered to have<br \/>epilepsy. It is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and affects people of all<br \/>ages, races, and ethnic background. Anything that interrupts the normal connections between<br \/>nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure. It can be high fever, low or high levels of blood<br \/>sugar, alcohol or drug withdrawal, or a brain concussion. There are many possible causes of<br \/>epilepsy, including an imbalance of neurotransmitters, tumors, strokes, and brain damage from<br \/>illness or injury. In most cases, there may be no cause that can be discovered for epilepsy.<\/p><p>MYASTHENIA GRAVIS<br \/><br \/>Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy the<br \/>communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in weakness of the skeletal muscles. It<br \/>affects the voluntary muscles of the body, especially those that control the eyes, mouth, throat<br \/>and limbs. Anyone can develop the condition but is more frequently seen in young women<br \/>during age 20 and 30, and men aged 50 or older. The cause of Myasthenia gravis is unknown and<br \/>there is no cure, but early detection and prompt medical management can help people live longer<br \/>and have more functional lives. The most common symptoms are visual problems, including<br \/>drooping eyelids and double vision, muscle weakness and fatigue, trouble swallowing or<br \/>pronouncing words, or weakness of the neck or limbs. There are two types<br \/>of gastrointestinal diseases: functional and structural. Functional diseases are those in which the<br \/>gastrointestinal tract looks normal when examined but does not move properly. They are the<br \/>most common problems and includes the ones such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome,<br \/>nausea, gas, bloating and diarrhea. Structural gastrointestinal diseases are those where the bowel<br \/>looks abnormal upon examination and does not work properly. Sometimes, the structural<br \/>abnormality needs to be removed surgically. Common examples of structural diseases include<br \/>stenosis, hemorrhoids, diverticular disease, colon polyps, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. The main types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease are Ulcerative Colitis and Chron\u2019s<br \/>Disease.<br \/><br \/>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Ulcerative colitis is a lifelong condition that causes inflammation and ulcers inside the<br \/>colon part of the large intestine. It often causes bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramping.<br \/>Most people experience periods with symptoms, called flares, followed by longer periods<br \/>of no symptoms called remission.<\/p><p>\u00a0 \u00a0\uf0b7 Crohn\u2019s disease is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and<br \/>irritation of the small and large intestine of the digestive tract. It is spread by<br \/>contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected sex<br \/>or through sharing injection drug equipment. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the stage of AIDS<br \/>(acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is no cure to HIV but effective treatment is<br \/>available. It can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood to undetectable levels. People who take<br \/>HIV medicine can\u00a0live long and healthy lives\u00a0and\u00a0will not transmit HIV to their HIV-negative<br \/>partners through sex. Hepatitis C can<br \/>lead to serious liver damage. The hepatitis C virus spreads through contact with blood that has<br \/>the virus in it from unsafe injection practices or unsafe health care, injection drug use or unsafe<br \/>sexual practices. Newer antiviral medicines are the treatment of choice for most people with the<br \/>ongoing hepatitis C infection. These medicines often can cure chronic hepatitis C. If left<br \/>untreated, the virus can cause serious complications such as cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver<br \/>failure.
