At Farmacia San Rafael we are always trying to ensure that we have a healthy community. We are willing to provide current information on health-related topics during community health fairs or with one-on-one consultations about the medicine that your doctor prescribes.
Next week we will provide blood glucose tests and take your body mass index to make sure your glucose levels are normal and if you are at the weight you need to be.
What is a Blood Glucose Test?
Blood glucose tests measure the levels of sugar in your blood. If you have too much or too little glucose both indicate signs of serious medical conditions. According to MedlinePlus a government site of National Institutes of Health United States Library of Medicine, these are the following symptoms of high or low glucose levels:
Symptoms of high blood glucose levels include:
- Increased thirst
- More frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Wounds that are slow to heal
Symptoms of low blood glucose levels include:
What is Body Mass Index or BMI?
BMI is Body Max Index and in simple terms, it measures if as an adult you are an underweight, normal or healthy weight, overweight, and obese. According to the Center for Disease Control:
“A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. BMI can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual.
To determine if a high BMI is a health risk, a healthcare provider would need to perform further assessments. These assessments might include skinfold thickness measurements, evaluations of diet, physical activity, family history, and other appropriate health screenings.”
Both the Blood Glucose Test and the Body Max Index will be done by professional health care staff.
